Knights of the Nine

"Knights of the Nine" (or KotN, as it is usually abbreviated), is an official plug-in from Bethesda Softworks that was released around Thanksgiving 2006. It is available for purchase as a digital download from Direct2Drive.com ($9.95 on its own or $19.95 bundled with other downloadable content) and is included in the "Game of the Year" edition of Oblivion. The GotY edition is available from the Oblivion Store or from your local software retailer. The official blurb goes like this:

The Gods have forsaken Tamriel.

A fallen King has been unchained from the darkness of Oblivion to seek vengeance upon the Gods who banished him. Only a champion pure of heart can vanquish the evil that has been released upon the land. You must heed the call, reclaim the lost relics of the Divine Crusader, and return the Nine to glory. New dungeons, characters, quests, and mysteries await.

Unlike most plug-ins, Knights of the Nine adds several locations, items and quests to the game, as well as a new faction that you can join. It's aimed at a combat-oriented character, such as a Knight or Crusader. But it will work for almost any class, although the restrictions on player Infamy might present problems for members of the Thieves Guild and/or Dark Brotherhood. It's several hours of playing time to get through it legitimately and a decent story on top of it. Well worth the ten bucks. One major bug, though.

If you load this plug-in and complete the questline before being pointed to Oleta, the Master Trainer for Restoration, you can never get there. The people who do the pointing get killed as part of the story and no one with the appropriate dialog takes their places. Solution for console gamers: don't load the plug-in until you've been pointed to the Master Trainer. This problem has not been fixed/patched by Bethesda and since it has been almost two years, don't hold your breath on it happening any time in the foreseeable future.

If you are on the PC, you can use the Console to work around this by simply activating the trainer quest:

Also, be aware that Wayshrines will function differently and the quest that nets you the "Pilgrim's Grace" power is changed/disabled by this plug-in. My recommendation would be to complete the quest before loading the plug-in. KotN doesn't remove the power once you have it; it merely changes the functioning of the Wayshrines such that you can't get it.
